Calling, digital residencies for Black artistsCalling, digital residencies for Black artists, is a project that addresses some of the major issues of inclusive practice in a digital arts environment. The website showcases the work in progress, highlighting questions of practice as they arise, without ever prescribing pat answers. The Calling message board www.calling.org.uk/forum/mix.php will be a focus of debate for these important questions. Please visit the board and let us know what you think. "It tunnels - you forget there is a cyber space out there that's bigger than the computer, because at the moment I'm here in the computer and it's a lot smaller than my studio," Gloria Ojulari Sule, www.calling.org.uk/pages/residencies/gloria/diary02.php "So we have the terminology, 'ubiquity'. And that's what's supposed to happen. And of course, what's supposed to be happening with digital technology in our world and what actually is happening are two very different things." Mac Dunlop, "Therefore, if the computer, like the robot can be seen as occupying a metaphorical space as Oother9, then the inter-language which we develop to speak directly to the computer becomes even more a parallel of Opatois9 or Opidgin9." Keith Piper, www.calling.org.uk/pages/commentary/piper/Piper_5.php "I do not necessarily think that the use of digital media brings a whole new set of concerns to arts practice, as it relates to what Black artists do. Forms of expression change all the time." Eddie Chambers. |
