Success for South West Films at First Light Awards

Young filmmmakers from the South West have achieved success at the First Light Film Awards  which took place at Leicester Square, London o­n 28 February 2006. The teenage chiller Come Play, produced by Bristol-based Calling The Shots with young people from Clevedon’s Barn Youth Centre scooped the First Light Award for ‘Best Horror’. The young people worked with producer Steve Gear, scriptwriter Brian Thompson and composer Anton Mullan. The film has also won Best Short Fiction at the Reel Teens Festival in New York and was shortlisted at Camera Zizanio in Greece.

Icehouse which was made by a group of young women from the Boffin Club in Swindon picked up the award for Best Thriller. The Boffins, who have been taking part in Mobile Media’s Young Cre8ives project, are a group of 8 girls from Hreod Parkway School who formed their own after school club to pursue their creative interests. Since Young Cre8ives the Boffins have gone from strength to strength and have made another film with cre8’s Keith Phillips they are submitting to a BBC competition which is a 60-second Shakespeare.
