The Isle of Man has its own language (Manx), its own parliament and, most
importantly, its own tax system which currently attracts a wide range of service
companies and a lot of feature films and major TV series. Isle of Man Film
offers potential production finance, a wide variety of natural locations,
a purpose-built sound stage and a film-friendly Government.
Founded in 1995 as part of the island's economic diversification policy,
the Isle of Man Film Commission and Isle of Man Film have thrust this 30-mile
long, 10-mile wide piece of rock in the Irish Sea more or less equidistant
between Liverpool and Dublin into the forefront of international film production,
rivalling Luxembourg for its tax benefits and readiness to welcome film-makers.
The IOM Media Development Fund makes an equity investment up to 25% of the
budget. Production credits are also available for productions funded wholly
or in part by a broadcaster.
Companies must be based in the UK or on the IOM to qualify. At least 50%
of principal photography must take place on the island. Additionally, the
production must spend at least 20% of its below-the-line budget with local
service providers; be otherwise fully funded; and have a sales agent and/or
distributor and a completion bond in place.
