Set up in 1997 under a Film Charter by Glasgow City Council, the Glasgow Film Office receives additional support from Scottish Enterprise and the Strathclyde European Partnership.

It aims to encourage production work in Glasgow, and has also been extremely active in supporting independent film and television production in the Strathclyde area. Support has been provided for over 40 major features in the past seven years.

The Office has now moved into Phase 2, where will funding will now be strictly limited to grants directed at assisting local production companies with a capacity for growth, facilities and services companies and freelance technical personnel. Direct production funding is no longer available, and what resources there are will specifically target companies producing 'high-impact productions' (those with budgets of £200,000-plus contributing £100,000-plus to the local economy) and 'high-value television' (with a commissioning value of over £50,000), of which at least 50% must be provided by the production company.

Funding categories are as follows:

  • Product Commercialisation (mainly in the form of advice on how to access international markets);
  • New Writer Integration (to encourage production companies to use untried writers);
  • Growing the Service Base (helping facilities companies);
  • Infrastructure Support Grants

Maximum aid levels:

  • £50,000 (Infrastructure Support)
  • £10,000 (Growing the Service Base)
  • £5,000 (New Writer Integration)
