Cornwall Film launches three new schemes

A boost for Cornwall’s Creative Industries

Cornwall’s film, television and new media businesses are set to grow. Cornwall Film launches a new project on the 31st March to develop the media industry in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Delivered with support from Objective one funding, South West Screen, Cornwall County Council and Penwith District Council, Cornwall Film offers investment and support for individuals and businesses working in film, TV and new media in Cornwall.

Over seventy local media freelancers and companies from all over the county attended the recent Cornwall Film Forum at University College Falmouth to debate how to build sustainability in the media sector.

The Production Fund will focus on attracting TV and film projects to shoot in the region, working with local companies and using local crew, facilities and services.

The Development Fund will invest in the development stage of a wide range of new projects, products and joint ventures.

The Company and Individual Fund will provide soft loans, support to attend trade fairs and festivals, and access to specialist mentoring.

Project Director Pippa Best described Cornwall Film’s ambitions for a sustainable media industry: "The aim is to establish an industry where local companies have regular work, employ regular staff and create opportunities for new entrants that stem the brain drain. We have fantastic talent here. We want to see local facilities companies and freelance crew employed on productions shooting in Cornwall, growing their skills and keeping them here as a resource for us all. Creativity and innovation must be valued alongside critical business and marketing skills to satisfy a growing appetite among audiences for great Cornish material. We want to work together to grow capacity, reach new markets, and help make a sustainable media industry a reality for Cornwall.

With the support of Creative Kernow and flicKerNOW, Cornwall Film is developing Cornwall Media Focus as a network for everyone working in media in Cornwall". Best says "Cornwall Media Focus will provide networking events and direct access to commissioners and sector specialists. We might hold a session with an experienced cameraperson one month, advice on writing TV series or developing new platforms for digital content the next - whatever members most want to cover. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for all of those involved in the sector to share contacts and information."

Media practitioners in Cornwall are now being encouraged to join Cornwall Media Focus online now via the Cornwall Film website at www.cornwallfilm.com
