Falmouth School Film Club - promotional video of the Cornwall Film Festival 2004

“I run the Film Club at Falmouth School and some of the club ’s members have worked with local film company OSCHA Productions to produce a documentary-style promotional video of the Cornwall Film Festival 2004 ”,writes Richard Langley.

“Eight members of the Falmouth School Film Club from years 8,9 &10 attended the Film Festival in November with a small crew from OSCHA Productions. The team met twice beforehand to discuss style and content as well as to plan ahead as best they could:a process that certainly paid off as there was a lot of footage to shoot in a relatively short time. The experience has been doubly beneficial in that the team have also had the opportunity to visit OSCHA ’s studios to participate in the editing process, and so they are experiencing the entire process of documentary film making from beginning to end. I am particularly impressed with the degree of creative input that the group have had into both the content and overall “look ” of the documentary. OSCHA ’s Martin Gaunt has worked very hard both to encourage the students to express their own vision and then to make that vision a reality. Overall, the experience has been very positive for everyone involved and has brought new skills into the club which will hopefully be applied to future projects.

“An exchange programme is developing between Falmouth School and Rednock School in Dursley, Gloucestershire, with the first visit in November. The resulting short films shot on that visit have now been edited and are being premiered in February at Falmouth School for an invited audience of parents and school staff.

“The next big challenge is a period costume drama, with locations being sought as I write. English Heritage has been enormously helpful, offering the school the opportunity to film for free inside Pendennis Castle and their other properties, and the National Trust and the Lost Gardens of Heligan have offered assistance with exterior locations. The club has been able to access finance from the school’s Business and Enterprise fund, thanks to the fact that the students are planning and budgeting the entire project themselves. The period drama is the first big project the students will have almost full control over. I always look for ways to push the students a little bit, to try something new, and they ’ve come such a long way.”
