Falmouth School Film Club - Current Projects

The Film Club is currently working with Denzil Monk and the team at Creative Partnerships to plan and organise the Young People’s Film Festival in Falmouth on November 18th. As part of this, they attended an Inspiration Day .
At the same time we are introducing new talent into the organisation from Years 7, 8 & 9 at the school. These members, aided by a few more experienced hands, are working on a stage adaptation of Alistair MacLean’s book HMS Ulysses to be staged at the school on the 19th & 20th January 2006. More information on this will follow.

Film Club Summer School 2005Film Club equipment and expertise was put to good use in August with three successful Summer School courses completed by students aged between 9 and 14 from the Falmouth and Penryn area. The resulting films, produced in just two days (one of which was mostly getting to know each other and learning about the equipment) are entertaining and of a good standard. Special mention is deserved of the Film Club’s secretary, Freya, who is now a year 11 student at Falmouth. Fresh from her recent work experience with Creative Partnerships, she gave up a lot of her time, half of which was unpaid, to mentor and support the students on these courses. The films fall into two groups. Micro-films of about 90 seconds and short featurettes. The idea for the micro films came from our recent experience at the Fresh Five festival in Bristol. Having undertaken the activity with complete novices it seems to be a very effective way of getting to grips with the practical business of film making and helps the participants to focus on telling a story in a short space of time. The featurettes were an opportunity to apply our full experience and knowledge in order to see what could be achieved. The summer school students by-passed the learning curve experienced by the club since May 2004 and got stuck into some pretty ambitious filming. We hope you enjoy the results. Dorks in Maroon (DIM): A tongue-in-cheek adaptation of the Men in Black. The DIM are called in to sort out the school’s “alien problem” but their quarry is always one step ahead. Some nice camera angles and changes in perspective make this a very watchable film. Directed by Yzobel Wilkinson, one of Week Three’s younger students. The Infiltrators: An action film shot during Week Two. The Infiltrators are sent into a top secret installation to obtain some documents but not all goes as planned. Establishing shots and camera angles make the school look like a fenced, heavily guarded institution. The guns are fakes; luckily for the camera crew! Directed by Greg Thomas and featuring a large cast of future stunt doubles! Where’s Fred?: A Follywood horror storyboarded entirely by the students. When Fred disappears, his friends go looking for him but before long they too fall victim to a ruthless killer. This film has a high body count, real stunts (aided by a student who does fencing), the most spectacular slow-motion dive yet filmed at the studios and a satisfying twist at the end.

House of Flying Bullets: A micro-film made in week one, we have extended the edit slightly to include more footage. These students simply developed a “goodie and baddie” theme in the action genre. We’re particularly pleased with some of the lighting effects, including “the shadow”, used in this film. Not for the faint-hearted! Directed by Finn and filmed by Will who is now a full member of the Film Club.

“Charming”: Brought to you by the “House of Flying Bullets” crew, another micro-film about what happens when Dilbert is accidentally given a bad luck charm for his birthday. We used the aging feature of moviemaker to create a “silent comedy” look for the film. Directed by Tom.

A Really Bad Day: Developing the theme from “Charming”, the Week Three students follow a group of people who walk under a ladder and experience a variety of misfortunes as a result. Includes that common scenario of being unable to find a toilet when you really need one!

Magical Mystery: A simple and effective micro-film about a magician who is better at making people disappear than she is at bringing them back!

Summer Outtakes: A short compilation of a few of the things that didn’t quite go to plan over the three weeks! Good staff are very hard to find….
