Berlin is widely regarded as one of the top three festivals for feature films in the world (alongside Cannes and Venice). The strength of this festival lies in its programme strands, where Competition, Panorama, Children's Film Festival, and The Forum each screen individually tailored programs of the latest works from around the world. Integrated into Berlin's structure is the European Film Market.

International Competition: Internationally, the Berlin Film Festival's most important section is the Competition which presents a wide range of feature films and short films from all over the world. At the end of the Competition, the International Jury awards the Festival's major prizes.

Awards for feature films include: Golden Berlin Bear Jury Grand Prix, Silver Berlin Bear, Silver Berlin Bear for the Best Director, Silver Berlin Bear for the Best Actress, Silver Berlin Bear for the Best Actor, Jury Prize, Silver Berlin Bear, the AGICOA award ('The Blue Angel') for the best European film, the Alfred Bauer Prize for a film debut, and the Silver Berlin Bear for outstanding achievement.

Awards for short films include: Golden Berlin Bear Jury Prize, Silver Berlin Bear. (Each year approximately 30 features and 10 shorts screen.)

International Forum of New Cinema: Created in 1971, the International Forum of New Cinema is an independent section of the Berlin International Film Festival dedicated to innovative and experimental cinema. It is a showcase for independent and alternative films, for films from developing countries, for a cinema outside of established genres and independent of market considerations.

The Forum is especially devoted to films with experimental aesthetics which develop new styles, reflect contemporary issues or open up new horizons. No genres, styles or formats of cinema are excluded. The Forum screens films which are considered impossible to screen or to distribute, but which contain a vision.

The following prizes are awarded: Wolfgang Staudte Prize (DM 20,000), Caligari Film Prize (approx. 2566 Euros), Prize of the Readers of the Berliner Zeitung (approx. 2566 Euros), FIPRESCI Prize of the International Filmcritics organisation, Netpac Award (Netpac= Network for the Promotion of Asian Films), Prize of the Ecumenical Jury, CICAE Prize (approx. 2566 Euros), Peace Prize (approx. 5112 Euros). (Each year approximately 80 films are screened).
