Imayla's residential film course

A MULTI-MEDIA RESIDENTIAL
AT THE PINKERY CENTRE
IN EXMOOR NATIONAL PARK
14-18 August 2006

The Context

This themed week is o­ne of three Imayla will be running at Pinkery over the summer holiday this year (other courses include a Multi-activity week and a Music week). 

The Multi-media week will be providing a course for up to 25 young people with plenty of time to enjoy the outdoor opportunities of the area.

Who is the multi-media course for?

The course is for young digital explorers aged 14-21 who have some previous knowledge of film making, radio or photography.  They need to be up for a bit of an adventure and to be challenged with new ideas and technology.  If there are people outside this age range who are keenly motivated and fit the bill, we’d be happy to consider them.

Who is running it?

Imayla is running the residential week and the course itself will be run by Firstborn Creatives and Calling The Shots, two companies from Bristol that specialise in getting young people involved with film making and digital media.  The workshop leaders are Rob Mitchell, Jeremy Routledge and Sam Walker. There will be a general coordinator o­n site with two youth/support workers.  

Nothing too prescriptive

The Multi Media week will focus o­n creativity and experiment in digital film making. 

We’ll be asking, “Just where do you get ideas”? ‘How do you capture that perfect moment of sound or a single image’? and ‘How do you control all the different elements that make up your film’?

Day o­ne will be all about getting down and dirty with your Creative Side, Day Two will be all about Sound, Day Three will be all about the Camera, then o­n Days Three and Four there will be the chance to work o­n your own digital project.

The mood will be relaxed and fun with lots of time to work at your own pace and experiment with ideas and fancy kit.  In the evenings there’ll be a chance to share what you’ve been working o­n and watch movies.

Tutors will be set up to respond to the inspiration and style of the young people o­n the courses.  Students are also welcome to bring any work they have already produced to work o­n further.

Cameras, mini-disks, editing equipment, lap-tops etc will be available for use but do bring anything you have.

The environmental inspiration element

The week is funded by Exmoor National Park’s Sustainable Development Fund and o­ne of the criteria for this funding is that visitors experience the physical and sensory delights of the natural environment they will be working in and a bit of the heritage of the area.  Students will therefore have the chance to shoot or record in new locations (beach, sea, moor, forest) and to be inspired by these elements, or to explore some old folklore, local stories or history etc to incorporate into their work.  More importantly though, they will just be able to have a great time in the big and beautiful outdoors.

Work and pleasure

The multi-media work itself will take place every morning after breakfast until lunchtime and then a shorter session after supper.  In the afternoons the young people will be able to do an activity in or outside the centre (surfing, climbing, mountain biking, football, sailing, canoeing, or just chilling o­n the beach).  After the evening workshop session they will have a couple of hours to relax, watch a DVD etc.

Follow-up opportunities

Teachers are Bristol-based so  Bristol participants will be facilitated to continue developing their creative talents back in Bristol and all the young people will make relationships with other young people they have worked with during the week (from Bristol, Somerset or elsewhere) that will hopefully spawn new collaborations.  Our media team is involved in a couple of film festivals that participants will also be encouraged to get involved in.

Administrative arrangements

Food and board (in rooms for 4/6) will be provided along with Imayla youth worker support.  Imayla will discuss with the organisation recommending the young people -- or directly with young people themselves -- travel arrangements, guidelines, consent forms, etc and welcomes youth workers from an organisation to accompany their young people if they want to.  We would like to ask for a contribution of £30 - £150 (depending o­n means) from each young person towards the cost of the week (see booking form for rates, concessions etc).

There will be a pick up in Easton and St Paul’s at 9.00 o­n the Monday morning of the 14th August.  Participants will be dropped back at these points in the evening of Friday 18th.  Participants coming from elsewhere may have to organise their own transport.
