About the course
This course is designed to inform and educate emerging filmmakers who demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment towards building their own sustainable careers and companies within the modern film industry.

You will:

  • Engage in practical exercises that will demonstrate knowledge of the film industry.
  • Prepare and pitch a film project to the other participants (Pitch should be under 3 minutes)
  • Write a finance plan for a feature film.
  • Create a well-informed and realistic business plan/mission statement for yourself and your projects.
  • Meet industry executives
  • have a chance to be monitored throughout the year after this course o­n your projects

What you will gain from the course
You, the emerging filmmaker, will gain an essential understanding of the current film industry in the UK and abroad. A grounding in the legal & business aspects of film. A knowledge of various methods of project planning and script development. Plus we aim to develop and maximize your potential towards a sustainable company and career in the film industry.

Who is it for?
The course supports those who may be o­n the brink of either setting up a film production company, or who are trying to navigate their first film into production. You should be self-motivated and actively seeking opportunities to enter the film industry, but you do not necessarily need to have practical experience in this field.

Course Outline:
Session 1
Introduction to the UK film industry and global Industry – 2006 what does a producer do and how do they function in the global marketplace/? Guest – ‘New Producer’ who has successfully set up an industry business. Industry ‘quiz’ Q & A with guest in group.

Session 2
What are the absolute minimum business and legal requirements to set up as a creative business? Guest- Entertainment Laywer or Accountant. After session discusses about rights and options etc

Session 3 & 4
Development financing - Looking at how to develop scripts, ideas, projects etc, Development guest to be confirmed.  Pitch workshop with sales agent or similar industry executives. Overnight, participants improve their package or pitch and practice in front of group.

Session 5
Show me the Money! A guide to the current availability of finance worldwide. How to build and wrote a finance plan for your project- Guests - 'closing deal Lawyer ' or financier. Business plans and finance models will be discussed.

Session 6
Going to Market- understanding the global film marketplace - Cannes etc. and learning how to distribute market your product- Guest: a distributor, short film distributor marketing manager etc,whatever is required by group.

About the facilitators
Anita Lewton is a Producer, Writer and Media Lecturer. She is currently producing ‘Weekend’ an international co-production (UK, Ireland, France, Germany) for E2 Projects, and ‘The Techno Pagan Octopus Messiah’, an Indian/ UK co-production feature adapted from a book.  She also produced Irish writer/ director, Shane O’Sullivan’s 35mm Short, ‘Lemon Crush’, which has played at a dozen festivals worldwide, sold to Sundance Channel USA, C4 and RTE Ireland and his first feature, digitally shot ‘Second Generation’.

Formally Anita worked as a Theatre director, then went to film school in Los Angeles & worked in productions in Hollywood.  She now teaches various filmmaking courses at: City Lit. Institute, London Institute, Metropolitan University, Coral Media, and FT2 Training.  She is o­n the Board of Directors of the NPA and is Head of NPA Training Projects with David Castro (CEO NPA).
