ID Remix
Exploring what identity means is the subject of a Creative Partnerships project that brings together two Plymouth schools and an award - winning documentary-maker. ID Remix is the title of the project involving a range of schools from Plymouth involved in their own projects: Stoke Damerel Primary School and Stoke Damerel Community College are beginning their investigation with Tom Keene, of Longbow Productions Ltd. Based at Lifton, Longbow have made films for the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 and received a number of awards including the prestigious Prix Stendahl for the best European Community programme.
The first ID Remix project will be working with student film-makers to explore a young person ’s identity – via sub--cultures like fashion or race. The project also looks at the morals and ethics around documentary-making,and about the ability to go into a community and discuss sensitive issues on-camera.
“This brings a whole different set of young people together, whilst dealing with the ideas of Plymouth ’s citizenship and citizen journalism and expressing what that might really mean,” says Creative Partnerships development manager Kate Reed.Student feedback so far on Tom ’s sessions included the fact that:“he brought up topics and areas that I wouldn ’t have considered important while making a documentary, which helped my perceptions on how to make one. The part I found most useful was seeing the introductions of his work and picking up the ways in which he makes his subject matter interesting to the audience.”
The project will continue into the summer of this year, focusing on the development of film and documentary-making and animation techniques. For more information you can contact kate.reed@creative-partnerships.com
