An Interview with Filmmaker Denzil Monk

Name: Denzil Monk

Age: 30

Location: Penzance

Profession: Scriptwriter & filmmaker

What did you want to be at school?
A courtroom lawyer or TV journalist

How did you start out?
Scribbling poetry in notebooks and reading my ideas out to friends, then at 6th Form, I wrote my first play over the Summer holidays instead of doing my Theatre Studies homework

What professional training or education did you receive?
I started a Theatre Degree in writing at Rose Brufords College of Speech & Drama when I was 18, then dropped out when I was 20 and have since learnt most of what I know by saying, "yeah, I can do that" and then working out how to do it in time for a deadline!

What or who were your main inspirations?
Noam Chomsky, Kurosawa, Milarepa and my Dad.

What achievement are you most proud of?
My daughter, Demelza.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
Every day of secondary school.

What are your main ambitions for the future?
Deconstructing the unsustainable global power system and reforming it into an ethical, peaceful, and far less serious force for the common good.

One piece of advice for young people? Don't believe anything - its all true
