o-region is proud to announce that we’ll be bringing the very first Futureshorts event to the Acorn Theatre in Penzance on 19th May 2005, at 8.00pm. Tickets are £5 / £4 and are available from The Acorn Box Office Tel: 01736 365520.

o-region has been invited to host the Cornish arm of this internationally-acclaimed short film network. The network was set up in 2003 to provide a forum for award-winning and innovative new short films by international directors – kind of like roughcut but on a much larger, grander and lusher scale! There are already Futureshorts in locations as diverse as London, Edinburgh, Lisbon, Amsterdam, Brussels and even New York – and now we can add Penzance to the list!

The films in the programme are really out of this world – most of them have received proper development funding and have scooped up international film awards, so we hope they will provide an inspiration to local filmmakers and provide an excellent complement to the local and low-budget work you’ll already be familiar with from roughcut.

There are ten films in all. Some of the highlights of the programme includes:

  • Jojo In The Stars, a jawdropping 3D animation directed by Marc Craste;
  • Le Cheval 2.1, winner of the Depict award at Brief Encounters;
  • Ward 13, an Oscar-nominated animation and winner of 13 awards at festivals around the world, directed By Peter Cornwell;
  • Music for one Apartment and Six Drummers, an inventive short that inspired a huge advertising campaign in Sweden;
  • Lift, in which filmaker Marc Issacs sets himself up in a London tower block lift and creates a humorous and moving portrait of a vertical community.

We really want to pack the show out so that we can continue Futureshorts as a regular event – so please tell your friends, distribute this email and let’s make sure we get a really fantastic crowd for this new short film extravaganza! If you’re even vaguely interested in short films and new filmmakers, you really can’t afford to miss this – so come along and we’ll see you there!
