An exhilarating mix of the old and the new make up the programme for May at Watershed. The new includes two extraordinary films from Denmark, Brothers and In Your Hands, whilst Sarajevo-born director Emir Kusturica provides his own distinctive, surreal take on the politics of his home country in the ribald Life is a Miracle. Oscar Wilde's ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan’ is given the all-star treatment in A Good Woman, Mike Barker’s adaptation which stars Scarlett Johansson, Helen Hunt and Tom Wilkinson. Amongst the old, we have two new prints of Hollywood classics: George Cukor's wonderful The Women featuring some of the grandest dames of cinema including Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer; and the iconic Rebel Without a Cause, featuring James Dean's most celebrated role. Also this month, a flavour of ¡Viva!, the annual festival of Spanish language cinema held in Manchester, arrives with a selection of Spanish and Latin American previews; and Spirituality and Cinema is explored in a season of films as part of a city-wide event on spirituality. There are opportunities to engage in new digital developments in the Café/Bar with I Can Read You, Simon Poulter’s exploration of new camera phone technology, and later in the month we will be asking customers to test one of the latest concepts currently being developed by Hewlett-Packard in California, The Misto Table.
