Sat 30 April, Mon 2, Wed 4 May 6pm Fri 29 April, Sun 1, Tues 3, Thur 5 May 8.30pm Maria is 17, lives in a backwater town outside Bogota and helps to support her family through her low paid, dead-end job. Too bright and restless to be satisfied with this or with the complacent boyfriend whose baby she is expecting, she meets a flash young man who mentions the possibility of work which promises high earnings and international travel. When she realises he is suggesting she become a 'mule', carrying heroin into the USA her instincts tell her that this could be her only chance to earn enough money to escape the cycle of poverty she is in. Without oversimplifying the issues or resorting to sentimentality, first time director Marston tells the story with great assurance and intelligence and without judgement. Catalina Sandino Morena, in her screen debut has won awards at Berlin and the film itself won the audience award at Sundance 2004. view trailer |
