cert 12A, 106 minutes. £ 5.00 director: Richard Loncraine with Maggie Smith, Chris Cooper Timothy Spall |
Adapted from William Trevor’s novel of the same name, Dame Maggie Smith stars as Mrs Ella Delahunty, an eccentric novelist living in Italy. She survives a terrorist bomb on a train, and invites other survivors to recuperate at her lavish estate. They all get along well until the arrival of the orphan’s uncle, an American academic who strongly disapproves of Mrs Delahunty’s carefree lifestyle. A stylishly crafted drama that also delivers a number of moving and rather telling moral insights - Maggie Smith is, of course, wonderful in the central role |
