Mon 24 - Thurs 27 April 8pm Written and directed by Tony Gatlif, (Latcho Drom, Gadjo Dilo) this road movie romance follows a pair of Parisiennes as they embark on a quest to discover their Algerian roots. Duris plays the young hipster Zano, who impulsively decides to drop everything and make his first visit to Algeria, where his grandfather was an anti-colonialist activist. Zano's girlfriend Naima (Azabal) nonchalantly agrees to come on the trip, and the passionate if volatile couple head across France and Spain to Africa, by train, foot, lorry, bus and ferry. En route they encounter immigrants heading in the opposite direction in search of work and experience many adventures - some life threatening, some mystical and some playful. The emphasis is less on language than on bodily sensations and it's music that powers their shared journey of discovery, whether it's the blaring techno playing on Zano's headphones, the flamenco performers they encounter in Andalusia or the tribal rhythms at a Sufi ceremony in Algiers. Exils was winner of Best Director prize at Cannes in 2004. |
