Impossible to describe but utterly irresistible - this is how OOJAMI is being described, and they are coming to wall this January! OOJAMI'S latest release 'urban dervish' is a fusion of Turkish elements with a myriad of cultural traditions, providing a whirling dervish cyclone of sound with layers and attitude, punk, party and jazz. Funk and break beats slink up to belly dancing and Sufi nuances, topped with vibrant Latin and African rhythms and exciting global sounds. Their name comes from a derivation of the English term 'oojamaflip', used when you can't remember something, and thus, an appropriate reflection of the band's indefinable identity. Their Debut album Bellydancing Breakbeats has been one of the best introductions to the global dance music scene in recent years, the success of this album culminated in the sexy French actress Audrey Tatou gyrating her hips to Oojami's 'Fantasty' in the cult film Dirty Pretty Things. Almost by default, the live band formed in 2000, when a friend at Brighton's Essential Festival suggested they play a set, and Necmi couldn't think of a good reason to refuse. Influenced by the music scene in Turkey and the crossover culture augmenting a mix of traditional instruments and modern beats. It has the energy of dance music, but also has more melody, and more cultural content. Oojami are not just a musical but a vivid visual experience too, providing a veritable feast for the eyes! |
