This is a French updating, rethinking and in most ways an improvement on James Toback's 1977 directorial debut, Fingers. In modern day Paris our young anti-hero (Duris) is a member of a small group of ruthless property developers who operate at the nastiest end of the market. As a younger man he was a gifted piano prodigy and when he meets Miao-Lin, a concert pianist, his love for playing and his dreams of becoming a professional pianist instead of a violent thug surface. With a beautifully nuanced performance from Duris, The Beat That… is a startling and hard-edged portrait of ruined dreams.
"One of the key European films of the year" - Derek Malcolm
"A raging gangster film with a marvellous cinematic conviction. As for Duris' performance you could light your cigar from it" - Financial Times The Beat That My Heart Skipped movie trailer |
