Best known as a punk purveyor of New Queer Cinema, Araki returns from years in the wilderness with his most mature, challenging and arguably finest film, a sensitive study of the effect of sexual trauma upon two young friends. Adapted from Scott Heim's novel, the film follows 8-year-old boys Brian and Neil the summer they are part of the little league team. Brian suffers a 5-hour blackout at one game that haunts his adolescence and leads him to believe he was abducted by aliens. Neil is attracted to their coach who takes sexual advantage of the crush. The boys come of age and follow divergent paths that ultimately lead them back to each other. Araki does not avoid the difficult issues and images of the story but softens the blow with an, at times, poetic and dreamlike aesthetic.
